Freedom of movement for little sleepers.

Low beds are a great way to encourage autonomy and freedom in the early developmental stages of your child’s life.

With the Birch Montessori Floor Bed, your child can enter and leave independently, letting them regulate their sleep according to their body's needs. This freedom of movement helps children learn about physical boundaries and develop spatial awareness while staying safe thanks to the bed's low height.

What makes this floor bed different from a mattress on the ground? This toddler bed is low but still lifts the mattress from the ground to stop mildew from growing!

Bed Sides

1 Low + 1 High Side is for beds arranged with a side against the wall. Put the high side next to the wall to help prevent wedging for children who roll in their sleep. If you arrange your bed with the head against the wall instead of a side, we recommend two Low Sides unless you plan to move it against the wall at some point.

2 Low Sides is ideal for beds arranged with the head of the bed against a wall. The Low Side has a wide entry point that goes along the entire side of the bed. Children will be able to climb in and out of bed safely in order to engage with their surroundings.

Scooped Sides shorten the entry point for children to climb off and on. Some parents find this helps for children who are attached to the support that their crib provides.

The Scoop Right Side has a high section on the left side and a scooped entrance on the right side. The child will sleep with their head by the high side with their feet by the scooped entrance.
The Scoop Left Side has a high section on the right side and a scooped entrance on the left side. The child will sleep with their head by the high side with their feet by the scooped entrance.

Each configuration can be adjusted to a taller, platform setting as children grow older and are ready for a taller "big kid" bed. Depending on the size of the mattress, the bed can last through their teenage years.

Safe & Effective Use

It is important for small children to have space to right themselves after rolling off the bed. For children under 18 months, do not place Low Side or Scoop Side closer than 12" away from the wall.

The High Side should be less than 1.5" or greater than 12" away from the wall. This will either prevent children from getting stuck or give them space to right themselves.

Our customers have found the following tips helpful in making their children's rooms safe and conducive to sleep with the Floor Bed:

  • Secure all furniture
  • Keep the bedroom minimal
  • Put something on the floor to cushion fall (body pillow, foam play mat, sheepskin, folded blanket)
  • Remove distracting toys
  • Use short curtains
  • Cover outlets
  • Switch the door lock around or use a baby gate
  • Use a baby monitor with a video

FAQ

At what age should I transition my child to a floor/toddler bed?

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises beds “intended to provide free access and egress to a child not less than 15 months of age.” These regulations prevent companies from selling beds that are not entirely enclosed as products for children under 15 months. Many families choose to switch their child earlier than 15 months while others choose to wait. We believe that you'll know what's best for your child. You know how your child sleeps, how their room is set up, what they'll need to grow and what you're comfortable with. Every child is different. We encourage you to observe and adapt your child’s space based off of their unique abilities and needs.

How can I help my child make the transition to a floor bed?

Read community feedback about their experiences transitioning to a floor bed as well as a sleep expert's advice below.

When is the best time to adjust the bed from the low to the high orientation?

The high orientation raises the mattress an additional 5 inches off the floor. The best time to adjust the bed is when your child feels comfortable getting into the bed independently with the additional height.

Just got better!

My toddler began using the floor bed in June at 18 months old. He recently stopped wanting to wear a sleep sack, so we started to introduce blankets. A single blanket was going well, but wanted to add a top sheet for easier cleaning rather than washing a blanket on a regular basis. I was wondering how tucking a top sheet would do on the floor bed side...then it clicked...it was time to flip the bed! My now two year old got an upgrade to a taller bed that accommodates his new change in blankets. It's just high enough to feel different, but still safe as he is used to a lot of climbing on and off things. I'm really excited about this change for him and I am pleased with our "new" bed!

Buying a second one!

Our oldest son has loved this bed! He’s been using it since before he could crawl and now he’s 18 mo. The bed was great for him to learn to crawl onto and serves his independence well now too! Our second son has arrived and I’m looking forward to buying another of these! Plus, how cute will their room be throughout their childhood with these sweet, pretty beds!

Didn’t hold up over time

We purchased this about two years ago as my wife was super into this company’s products. It has held up well over time. Fast forward to yesterday when the wood slats fell out from underneath them while they were on the bed. Seems as if the center pieces had expanded/warped out over time, and the wooden slats wouldn’t stay held in the center anymore. We now l have a true floor bed (read: just the mattress).

Hi Ryan! When you posted your review this was the first we had heard from you and we wanted to make it right by guiding you through assembly and/or sending replacement parts. It is our standard to get photos so we know if parts are needed or if it was misassembled when you switched it to the raised bed. We are sorry that you felt this was unreasonable; it sounded like there was a fixable issue as this is not the experience that we want our customers to have, and if something was broken the fix is definitely covered within the 5-year warranty! If you change your mind, we would be happy to work through this with you and make it right.
